Have You Hugged Your Child Today?

For decades, experts have been telling us that any psychological ailments that befall a person are his parents’ fault. The experts have now become a little more specific.

It’s mom’s fault.

This from an article in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, as reported on ParentDish in a July 26th post by Monique al-Faizy.

According to a study over some 30 years, “people whose mothers showered them with affection as infants are better equipped to cope with the stresses of life when they are adults.”

Well, I’d certainly like to congratulate the head researcher on this one. Let’s see…get one research grant, make it last three decades, retire. Nice gig!

Was there really any doubt that affection in infancy translates to more well-adjusted adults? I know that the scientific method sometimes reveals things that are counter-intuitive, but, on the other hand, I don’t think anyone has an image of Hitler as a baby cradled cozily in his mother’s arms as she lovingly trimmed his mustache.

Okay, so fine. You did a study and you confirmed what most sane people probably suspected, that growing up with a nice, normal mom is better than growing up with Joan Crawford.

Now, what do you expect anyone to do about it?

Look, if a mother was not going to be naturally affectionate, do you think she’s going to pick up her latest issue of the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health (to which she subscribes because she got a FREE tote bag), read the article, and think to herself, “Oh, my, I better go cuddle my baby so that he does not turn into Mel Gibson.”

Meanwhile, there are millions of moms out there who may already feel guilty because they have to work for a living in order to even feed their kids, and these researchers are telling them that their babies are going to be basket cases as adults because they (the moms) were at the office instead of hugging their kids a little more!

Come on! How about spending 30 years studying something useful? Like how come the Mets suck so much?
